Single Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis)

The common snowdrop, utterly dependable and properly hardy. Best planted in the green straight away when they arrive – for a naturalistic look, plant in small groups of 3s and 5s, spacing each group about 30cm apart. They’ll naturalise beautifully under deciduous trees and shrubs, spreading into proper drifts over the years. Tolerates most soils but appreciates a bit of leaf mould worked into heavy clay. Once established, they practically look after themselves, coming back stronger each year. Lift and divide established clumps after three to five years to expand the display. The finest sight in the February garden.
