In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to transform raw fleece into a soft, durable rug with rich texture and character for you to take home.
Wet felting is the oldest form of textile making and has been recognised in the Uk as a heritage craft since the 1100’s It has a rich history in Scotland with something known as Waulking. Waulking, also known as fulling, is a traditional process of soaking the fabric, followed by the rhythmic beating and kneading accompanied by singing traditional Gaelic songs. This process makes the felted fabric more dense and durable.
In this workshop you’ll explore fleece selection and layout, fibre blending, and how the wet felting process bonds the fibres into a strong finished piece. You’ll also learn tips for shaping, finishing, and caring for your rug so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with some fibre arts experience. Come prepared for an upper body workout as wet felting can be somewhat physically demanding.
All materials to make your rug will be provided and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear as part of this workshop will take place outside.
